Addictions Unplugged: Food Addiction – Addictions Unplugged: Food Addiction This workshop will have us look at how addiction works in the brain. We will look at how we get wired to substances such as drugs and alcohol, and relate this to behaviors such as eating disorders and compulsive overeating. Learn how food is an addiction, just like any drug. Come learn and talk about: How and why we get addicted The process that hijacks our brains in regards to eating disorders and compulsive overeating How our brain works in our fear and pleasure centers How to ‘unplug’ ourselves Presented by Dr. Vera Tarman MD. FCFP, CASAM, M. Sc. Medical Director of Renascent since 2006 Staff physician with the Salvation Army Homestead since 2004 Has been working in the field of addictions, private practice, since 1992 Has her ASAM certification (American Society of Addiction Medicine) Has taught various College and University level courses The Biology of Addiction and Recovery Get the medical view on how the brain works in our fear and pleasure centers how and why we get addicted the addictive substances that hijack our brains (cocaine, alcohol, THC, prescription meds) as well as problematic behaviors (eating disorders/gambling) how to ‘unplug’ ourselves from addiction, especially through the 12 step program of action
