i a tenured doctor at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital. i am also the the Department of Diagnostic Medicine so i think i can tell you a bit about vicodin….

not to many years ago my right leg was severly damaged and i suffered from idiosyncratic infarction it went undiagnosed for two days and This missed diagnosis by hmy doctors caused muscle death in my quadricep. and for my pain i was taking vicodin.

vicodin… a narcotic painkiller. it takes all the pain away. i was able to walk around without the use of a cane when i am on it. but i became very addicted to it and was put in a mental institute when i went through withdrawls from not taking it. now that i am off of it i have to find hobbies to support it. cooking.. no, to easy for sex jokes. laundry? hell no wilson wont stop hasseling me not touching his shirts. medical practice is the only thing that keeps me of vicodin and painless. but the distraction of cuddy’s breasts makes it oh so easy to get distracted.

Hydrocodone is a semi-synthetic opioid derived from two naturally occurring opiates- codeine and thebaine. In The United States hydrocodone as a single product is a schedule II drug. Hydrocodone in a combination formation under 20 mg per pill is a schedule III drug.

Vicodin is a combination product consisting of hydrocodone and acetaminophen (aka paracetamol out side of North America).

Vicodin in available in three forms:
Vicodin 5/500
Vicodin ES 7.5/750
Vicodin HP 10/660
The fist number is the amount of hydrocodone (in milligrams) and the second number is acetaminophen (also in milligrams), typically written as APAP.

The opioid in Vicodin, hydrocodone, in also used in several other drugs, primarily Lortab, Lorcet, Norco, and Vicoprofen.

Lortab, Lorcet, and Norco all contain hydrocodone and acetaminophen but each has a different amount ratio of hydrocodone to acetaminophen.
Vicoprofen contains Ibuprofen and hydrocodone.

Under US law hydrocodone can not be sold as a a single produce (ie only containing hydrocodone). All drugs containing hydrocodone must consist of multiple drugs.

A government panel recommended pulling multiple drugs from market including Vicodin do to people misusing it and taking far too much acetaminophen.

In a study by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) in 2005 (The Monitoring the Future survey) found that in 2005, 9.5% of 12th graders used Vicodin in the past year for non-medical use.

“DEA establishes Aggregate Production Quota (APQ) for the maximum amount of schedule I and II substances which may be manufactured in the United States for legitimate national scientific, medical and export needs, and for the maintenance of stocks. The APQ for hydrocodone has increased over 100 percent since 2000 (from 21,417 kg in 2000 to 46,000 kg in 2007).”

“According to the 2005 International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) Report, the United States manufactures nearly 100% of the total hydrocodone manufactured worldwide. It also constitutes 99% of the world consumption of hydrocodone.”

“The Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) is another SAMSHA database which collects data on drug-related emergency department (ED) visits from a nationally representative sample of hospitals from selected metropolitan areas within the United States.  In 2002, the last year national data is available, hydrocodone with acetaminophen was the tenth most reported drug among the top 150 controlled substances.”

“The DAWN database also collects data on drug-related deaths reported Medical Examiner (ME) Offices in 32 metropolitan areas. In 2002, the last year national data is available; hydrocodone was the eighth most reported drug among the top 20 controlled substances.”
